Unveil.Health - UHPortal, Metadata-Driven Healthcare Data Platform

The goal was to prove a fully configurable, metadata-driven healthcare data platform was achievable at production standards.

Introduction

A configurable healthcare intelligence platform - where data workflows, dashboards, and applications are built without writing code.

Most healthcare intelligence platforms are built around a fixed structure: predefined dashboards, hardcoded workflows, interfaces that require engineering effort to change. Unveil.Health set out to challenge that model, but proving the concept required building something technically complex from the ground up.

The Problem

  • Dashboards Couldn't Adapt: Traditional dashboards target a fixed set of metrics. Every new view or chart required an engineering change - creating a permanent backlog of requests.
  • Data Workflows Were Locked in Code: Processing logic was embedded directly in the application. Adding a step or changing the order of operations meant going back to development.
  • UI Components Built for Single Use: Components designed for one screen couldn't be reused elsewhere, leading to inconsistent interfaces and duplicated effort across the product.
  • Compliance Was an Afterthought: Many platforms were built without accessibility or internationalization in mind, limiting use in regulated, multilingual environments.
Frontend and Backend Were Poorly Connected. Surfaces had to be manually coded rather than driven by the data model - every data change required a corresponding frontend change, creating a tight, fragile coupling. The challenge was to build a platform where the structure itself could be configured, not just the content inside it.

The Solution

Promact designed UHPortal as a metadata-driven web application - the database defines not just the data but the structure of the interface itself. Pages, widgets, charts, and workflows are described in the backend and rendered dynamically by the frontend, with no hardcoding required.

  • Metadata-Driven Page Rendering: Page definitions, widget configs, and layout instructions are read from PostgreSQL stored procedures at runtime - new views are created by updating the database, not the frontend.
  • Visual Workflow Builder with DAG Support: A drag-and-drop canvas built on React Flow with Dagre auto-layout lets users connect nodes visually, enforces valid connections, and auto-saves as it's built.
  • Dynamic Dashboard Intelligence: Charts and data cards render from configurable Postgres queries with no logic fixed in the frontend, supporting any charting library and full error handling.
  • Live Application Viewer: Workflows move from draft to live, rendering fully dynamic pages with charts, tables, and runtime data - each defined entirely in the database.
  • Enterprise Accessibility & i18n: Built to WCAG 2.0 with keyboard navigation, screen reader support, and cross-browser compatibility - English and Spanish shipped from the start.
  • Direct PostgreSQL Integration: The frontend communicates entirely through versioned stored procedures, separating data logic from UI logic so each can evolve independently.
